Whalesborough Park: A Journey Through Time and Vision
Nestled in the heart of Cornwall's sweeping countryside, Whalesborough Holiday Cottages & Spa is more than a collection of holiday homes; it is a place rooted in centuries of rich history, land stewardship, and family legacy. As they launch their new range of Harbur Park & Leisure Homes holiday homes, we’re starting with the story of this remarkable place—how Whalesborough came to be, and the vision behind its transformation into the haven it is today.
A Legacy Dating Back to 1355
Whalesborough story begins over 650 years ago, in 1355, during the time of William the Conqueror. Ancient documents reveal the early presence of Whalesborough, where traces of medieval life shaped the land and the community around it. With references to "Cande Martea," these historical records capture a fascinating picture of a bygone era when Whalesborough’s roots were being sown. Even today, echoes of its storied past remain visible, including remnants of a Roman road, a chapel, and perhaps the most fascinating relic of all—a secret grave, rumoured to be the resting place of a Roman war horse dressed in armour, a testament to the layers of history beneath the ground.
The Proudfoot Family’s Vision
In 1963, Whalesborough took a new turn when the Proudfoot family acquired it as a 550-acre working farm. Originally a dairy and sheep farm, Whalesborough was a place where every member of the Proudfoot family came together, not only to run the farm but to live, grow, and nurture the land they loved. For over six decades, the Proudfoots dedicated themselves to sustaining the land, growing both crops and memories on Whalesborough soil.
With each passing generation, the family shared a vision that went beyond farming. They envisioned Whalesborough as a place of beauty and tranquility, where guests could experience the same connection with nature that they had felt for years. This vision set the foundation for what Whalesborough would become—a place that could offer sanctuary to both the family and to those who would one day visit as guests.
Transforming the Land: A Vision Realised
In 2009, the first major transformation began with the creation of a beautiful lake. The lake became a centrepiece for the park, not only enhancing the natural landscape but providing a peaceful retreat for visitors, birds, and local wildlife alike. Soon after, in 2012, the first cottages were built, thoughtfully designed to blend with the countryside and offer guests a tranquil escape within Whalesborough’s historic grounds.
Three years later, in 2015, the Proudfoot family added the Wier Restaurant, a place where guests could savour farm-to-table meals while overlooking the lake and countryside. Each addition, from the woodlands planted by the family to the winding pathways that cross the grounds, was carefully integrated into the landscape, ensuring that Whalesborough retained its natural beauty and ecological balance.
Preserving Nature and Family Legacy
Over the years, the family’s dedication to conservation has added 500 acres of woodlands and nurtured a sustainable ethos across the park. These woodlands, planted by the Proudfoots, serve as a living tribute to their love for the land and the future of Whalesborough. They created not only a stunning landscape but an enduring environmental legacy.
